Best Tips for Sunglasses Repair & Lens Replacement

Sunglasses Repair & Lens Replacement

Sunglasses are one of the most commonly used accessories. It is recommended to wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet (UV) radiation to protect the eyes from serious damage and even skin and eye cancer.
Sunglass lenses are made of plastic, glass, or SR-91. Plastic lenses are generally made from polycarbonate, acrylic, or polyurethane. Glass lenses provide the best optical clarity and are scratch resistant. They can also break, crack or shatter by force. Plastic lenses are lighter than glass ones and mostly shatter-resistant but are more prone to scratching. Polycarbonate plastic lenses are the lightest, and are also almost shatterproof, making them good for protection from impact.
The frames of a pair of sunglasses are usually made of nylon, plastic, or metal. Plastic frames are light and more durable in addition to being more affordable than other alternatives.  Nylon frames are more flexible and lightweight. They are easily able to bend slightly and return to their original shape instead of breaking when pressure is applied to them. This flex helps in improving the glasses’ grip on the wearer’s face. Metal frames are usually more rigid.
Sunglasses can bend or break while traveling or moving from one place to another without a holster. Scratch, cracks, or spots due to dirt, dust, or smudge on the lenses are also uncomfortable and pretty annoying.
However, if the glasses are mildly damaged that does not mean it needs to be replaced. Small scratches, loosened nose pads and arms of the glasses, bent or broken frames, etc. can be replaced or repaired without spending much money or having to go to the clinic with some simple, easy, and affordable tricks.
A scratch on a pair of sunglasses can be repaired with the help of toothpaste, baking soda, and scratch, and scratch removal products. Use a microfiber and clean the glass well first. Apply the toothpaste to the lens, using a soft cloth and dab on the spot for 30 seconds, and rinse it with cold water after that. The scratch should be gone. With baking soda form a paste with water and follow the same process as that with the toothpaste. There are also a variety of products available in the market designed to remove scratches. Always follow the instructions on the product.
Sometimes the screws of the arms of the sunglasses can get loose because of constant use making it uncomfortable to fit. In such a case, a sunglasses repair kit can be used to tighten the screws making it as good as new.
At times the metal frames bend and get out of shape. You can use a soft plier and bend it slowly back in shape. If the arm is the problem, warm up the metal a little bit. However, if the metal frame is broken special welding must be done by experts.
Unlike metal frames, plastic frames require heat to alter their shape, and hence it is recommended to be done by an optician only. In case of a broken plastic frame, super glue can be used to hold it together.
