How to Remove Scratches From Eyeglass Lenses at Home?
Eyeglasses. One of the most stunning marvels of the progress of technology, Eyeglasses, has been used for hundreds of years by people with some sort of ocular problem. Diseases like nearsightedness and farsightedness have plagued people since prehistoric times, hindering their vision, rendering them unable to see near/far objects, and many other such devastating effects that can surely ruin one’s life: so far, the only solution to these kinds of diseases rests in Eyeglasses, the utility used by more than 40% of people around the world.
While it’s a general rule that you have to take proper care of the different parts of your eyeglasses, the lenses are one of the most vulnerable parts, as these can be damaged quite easily by even the most unmitigated of circumstances. A careless rub with a fingernail could leave a deep scratch in your lenses that would irritate you whenever you used that pair of glasses, which is why learning Eyeglass Repair at home is a useful and helpful trick! If you know how to, you can use the most everyday ingredients, such as toothpaste and a cloth, to remove all kinds of scratches from your lenses.
The Toothpaste Method
The toothpaste method requires non-abrasive toothpaste and a soft, clean cloth, preferably cotton or wool as these work best. Follow the steps below to remove scratches with toothpaste:
- Rub a little toothpaste onto the cloth you’re using for the job.
- Slowly and gently start buffing the lens with the cloth, making sure to rub around the scratch itself. You should take care, as people often put too much force and ruin their glasses.
- Buff the lens with the cloth in small circles for about 10 seconds; after 10 seconds, rinse the glasses with cold water and wipe dry.
Note- If your Eyeglasses came with an anti-scratch coating, you may have to completely rub this off, as this can often make it very hard to get to the actual scratch itself.
The Armor Etch Method
For new types of Eyeglasses made of plastic lenses, you can use a compound called Armor Etch, which is a glass etching compound, to remove scratches at home. Follow the steps below to learn more about using Armor Etch:
- Place a coating of the compound on either side of the lenses, making sure it’s thick enough to cover the lenses.
- Let the lenses with the compound on it sit for about five minutes, before rinsing them in cold water and drying them.
Note- You shouldn’t use Armor Etch for glass, as the Hydrofluoric Acid present in Armor Etch will surely damage the eyeglasses even further. Armor Etch should only be used for lenses made of plastic.
Also, take care that you don’t rub the compound into the lenses, as this can be harmful. Just apply the compound on either side of the lens, let it sit, and then rinse and dry, and any scratches you had on your plastic lenses will be gone!
