Why Luxottica is a Top Company in the Sunglasses Market?
At a sunglass counter or any department store and people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars for the perfect pair of designer shades.
Luxottica, a ‘little-known but very big Italian company’ appears to have gained total domination over the world’s eyewear production by making 65 million sunglasses last year; making prescription frames and sunglasses for nearly every designer brand, from Prada and Chanel to Ralph Lauren, Versace and Tiffany’s, Bulgaria Coach, Ray-Ban and more but they don’t own these brands.
Other than these brands around 80% of the sunglasses market has nothing to do with Luxottica, from cheap import knockoffs to designer lines like Gucci, or high-end sunglass specialists like Costa and Maui Jim, Luxottica is not involved with them.
Luxottica started as a small tool shop in the Italian Alps has turned into a company that made 65million pairs of frames last year, bringing in $ 8 billion.
Luxottica’s global wholesale distribution network includes more than 150 countries and is complemented by its stretched-out retail network of around 8,000 stores. The company recently announced plans to merge with lens manufacturer Essilor in a move that will create a $50 billion industry behemoth. In Simple words, this Italian Company is ruling the sunglasses market worldwide. Hence it is quite clear why Luxottica maintains domination over the sunglasses market.
